UXUA is the most romantic small hotel in Brazil. The dream-child of former Diesel creative director Wilbert Das, it occupies eleven historic fishermen's cottages restored and reimagined around the Quadrado — the grass-covered colonial square in the village of Trancoso, in southern Bahia. Each casa is its own private compound, hand-built with reclaimed peroba wood, hand-glazed tiles, mosaic-floor bathrooms, outdoor garden showers and, in many cases, a private plunge pool. The communal pool is lined in semi-precious aventurine quartz that supposedly soothes the heart chakra; the Almescar Spa uses Brazilian medicinal plants harvested from the hotel's own forest gardens. By day you walk barefoot down a dirt path to Praia dos Nativos and the UXUA beach club; by evening you eat by candlelight on the Quadrado as fireflies rise from the grass and a samba band tunes up. There is no equivalent in Brazil and very little equivalent anywhere — UXUA is a once-in-a-honeymoon hotel.

Getting there is a project — fly into Porto Seguro (BPS), then 80–90 minutes by road. The hotel arranges transfers but allow buffer time.
Trancoso village is rustic by design — sand streets, simple infrastructure. If you want polished resort-style operation, this is not the place.
Rains heavily in the Bahian wet season (April–June). November to March is the sweet spot.
Restaurants on the Quadrado are open to all — the village has a bohemian, scene-y vibe in high season (Christmas / Carnival / New Year).
Not adults-only — but the casas are private and family bookings are unusual outside school holidays.

How do we get to Trancoso?
Fly Rio or São Paulo to Porto Seguro (BPS), then a 90-minute road transfer arranged by UXUA. Some couples charter a small plane to the local Trancoso airstrip — the hotel can organise it.
When is the best time to go?
December through March is high summer and the village is at its liveliest. November and April–May are quieter, slightly cheaper, and still warm. Avoid June and the Brazilian winter rains.
Should we pay for a private plunge pool?
If your budget allows, yes — it is the defining UXUA experience. The aventurine communal pool is small and gets used; your private plunge is private.
Is the food at UXUA good?
Excellent. The hotel restaurant on the Quadrado is one of Trancoso's best, and the beach club does outstanding fresh fish. The wider village has more good small restaurants per capita than almost anywhere in Brazil.
