Casa Malca occupies the former Tulum beach mansion of Pablo Escobar (yes, that one), bought and transformed by New York art dealer Lio Malca into a 70-suite art-hotel on the Tulum strip. The aesthetic is unlike anything else on the Riviera Maya: white curtains everywhere (the famous "curtain-room" is the most photographed space in Tulum), sculpture by KAWS and Warhol in the gardens, candlelit jungle paths, and Tulum-bohemian-meets-Soho-gallery atmosphere. The beach is full-strip Tulum quality, with sargassum varying by season. The spa is good (not great). The food at Ambrosia is genuinely strong — Mexican-Mediterranean by chef Pedro Abascal. The hotel is family-friendly officially but functionally adult most of the year. Caveats: the design-forward atmosphere is not for everyone; some guests find it pretentious.
